Clinical and bacteriological profile of neonatal sepsis: a prospective hospital-based study in a tertiary care hospital in eastern zone of West Bengal

Background: Neonatal sepsis remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among neonates clinical manifestations are non-specific. Delayed identification inappropriate treatment remain as key factors causing high neonatal mortality. Increasing emergence multidrug-resistant organisms reduces antibiotic options. Hence there is need for institutional guidelines based on local microbial prevalence their susceptibility patterns.Methods: Blood cultures were collected from all suspected cases prior to the initiation antimicrobial therapy. with positive blood culture included in study.Results: Among 170 neonate was 41 (preterm - 71% term 29%). Early onset (EONS) constituted 61% Late (LONS) 39%. Respiratory distress, hypoglycaemia, seizures, lethargy more common presentations EONS while cellulitis, sclerema, septic arthritis, loose stool, vomiting, hyperthermia recurrent apnoea LONS. Gram 51.2%, gram negative 46.3%, fungi 9.8% total pathogens. cons (43.9%) most amongst Klebsiella (22%) common. Candida peliculosa commonly isolated fungus. Cons, staphylococcus enterococcus seen be 100% sensitive linezolid. Enterococcus also showed sensitivity vancomycin, teicoplanin tigecycline. Gram-positive bacteria highest linezolid vancomycin. Acinetobacter baumanii 80% gentamicin, 60% tigecycline colistin. E. coli 66% tigecycline.Conclusions: We able analyze causative pathogens, associated risk factors, pattern sepsis.
